Student Life

Taiwan is a diverse state, full of natural beauty and many exciting cities, and is home to people from all over China and the world. Capstone Year students who choose the Taipei Program will find that Taiwan is full of surprises and well worth exploring.

Many cities in the United States have clear divisions between their business districts and residential areas, and require owning a car to get around most conveniently. Cities in Taiwan -- especially Taipei -- integrate business and residential areas, and have extensive public transportation systems. In fact, public transportation is widespread and inexpensive throughout Taiwan, allowing students to travel easily and explore the state. Students who live in Taipei can closely experience many aspects of Taiwanese culture and lifestyle. From shopping the night markets to visiting cultural sites to hiking mountains or spending time at the beach, most of these activities can be reached from NTU within an hour or less, which makes it easy for Flagship Capstone students to immerse themselves in Taiwanese culture.

Perhaps most important for students whose goal is to raise their Chinese language skills to a superior level, the Taiwanese people are very friendly, open, and happy to speak with foreign students and visitors. While in the Taipei Program, students will have innumerable opportunities to meet and socialize with their Chinese peers, as well as with younger and older people, both on and off the NTU campus. Student life at NTU and in Taipei is rich with chances to learn and have fun!

While learning and fun are good goals, students must also be mindful to keep themselves safe while traveling and living abroad. Information is power. To this end, the Hunter College Chinese Overseas Flagship Program has written both a Program Handbook and a Student Life Guide to help students as they embark on the final part of their Flagship experience.

Program Handbook

The Program Handbook contains important information on many aspects of the Capstone Year Program, and is mandatory reading for all students heading to Taiwan. Some of the areas covered are Administrative Procedures, Finances, Travel Documents, Housing, Health and Safety, and the Program’s Code of Conduct.

Student Life Guide

The Student Life Guide provides essential information to help students adjust to life in Taiwan, including such advice as how to get from Taoyuan International Airport to NTU, how to use an NTU EasyCard, where to open a bank account, where to grab a bite, and much more.
