Introduction
The Chinese Language Flagship Program
Combining intensive language instruction and cultural immersion, the national Language Flagship Program is a leader
in educating American undergraduate students in languages critical to U.S. National Security. In our increasingly
interconnected world, careers in business, technology, government, and many other arenas rely on a high degree of
global cultural understanding and effective communication to solve a variety of multifaceted issues. Mandarin
Chinese, besides being recognized as a language critical to national and international security and stability, is
spoken by over one billion people and is the official language of the world’s second largest economy. Cognizant of
this reality, each year dozens of American undergraduate students support their domain interest by choosing to
double-major in Mandarin, and join a Chinese Language Flagship Program at one of twelve universities across the U.S.
Each Flagship institution offers a different plan of rigorous study, with a variety of courses, programs, and
extracurricular activities that will ensure students gain proficiency and fluency in Mandarin Chinese.
The Indelible Value of Study Abroad
An important requirement of the Chinese Language Flagship Program is that students take part in an intensive
study-abroad program for at least one summer, and that they further hone their Mandarin skills with a full academic
year -- known as the Capstone year -- abroad. The Capstone year is the final component in attaining superior fluency
in Chinese. In Nanjing, and now Taipei, students enroll in undergraduate courses alongside their Chinese peers,
engage in internships with businesses or institutions related to their non-language domain, and develop themselves
as capable bilingual, bicultural professionals.
A New Location
The year-long Capstone Program in Taipei, Taiwan at National Taiwan University is a new addition to the Chinese
Flagship Program and the Language Flagship family. The Taipei Center offers unparalleled language instruction,
exceptional affordability, and unique opportunities for students to develop themselves as impressive global
professionals.
