In 2018 the online InterNations Expat Insider survey of “Best Countries for Expats” gave Taipei a First Place ranking for the general friendliness of the Taiwanese and their positive attitude toward foreign residents. An overwhelming 94% highly rated the general friendliness of locals in Taipei.

In the annual, originally U.N.-initiated World Happiness Report for 2018, Taiwan ranked First in Asia in “happiness,” ahead of Singapore (34), Japan (54), South Korea (57), Hong Kong (76), and China (86), and ranked 26th in the world overall among 156 countries and territories.

According to a study commissioned by Business Insider, published on August 8, 2017, Taipei was ranked First in Asia and Fifth among the world’s most technologically advanced 85 cities. Taipei, the only Asian city in the top five, led other cities in industrial design, hardware, the number of headquarters of some of the largest PC companies, and the number of venture capitalists.

Taiwan is also a vibrant democracy, where freedom, rule of law, and human rights are all fostered and protected. In Freedom House’s 2018 survey of global freedom, Taiwan was tied for 8th Place in Freedom out of 210 countries in the world.

Established in 2002, The Language Flagship began a national initiative in 2006 to develop undergraduate programs that radically improve the way American college students learn foreign languages. By dedicating themselves to the Language Flagship’s unique methodology and integrative and immersive approach, Language Flagship graduates become professionally fluent in their target language, and can confidently participate in the global economy. There are now over twenty Language Flagship universities across the United States, offering programs in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu, languages which are critical to U.S. competitiveness and security.

One of twelve Chinese Flagships in the U.S., Hunter College Chinese Flagship is a rigorous honors program designed for outstanding undergraduates who seek to attain superior proficiency in Mandarin, while pursuing an academic major of their choice. With New York City as our home, the Hunter College Chinese Flagship is able to offer a rich array of linguistic and cultural resources and opportunities. The four-year Flagship program consists of content-based instruction, one-on-one conversation practice, community service, internships, and at least once summer spent studying abroad in China. Students who have met the language requirements have the opportunity to spend their senior, or Capstone, year in either Nanjing, China or Taipei, Taiwan.
