Taipei, the exciting capital of Taiwan, has been developing since the early 18th century. The city started with the formation of several marketplaces along the Tamsui River, and over time became an important business hub in northern Taiwan. In the 19th century, the Qing Dynasty named Taipei the provincial capital. Since then, Taipei has gradually become the political, economic, arts, and financial center of Taiwan. Today, Taipei is a diverse city that embraces immigrants and various ethnic groups.
